A Day of Twelve...
One thing I love about kindergarten is how excited children become when they discover new things. Sometimes things happen at school quite unexpectedly and become what teachers call a "teachable moment". That is what happened today with the number 12. The date today is March 12, 2012, which we all noticed while doing our morning calendar routine. Then we counted the days in school (we didn't count the gradual entry days at the beginning of the year). The days in school were 112. We all thought that was pretty neat and carried on with our morning. We had a couple late arrivals this morning (daylight savings possibly?). One boy arrived wearing a shirt with a number 12 on it! I didn't notice, but the children certainly did! So then they began to notice 12 in other places in the room, like the number line and number chart. Well, we had quite a few children away today so in the end we counted the children - and as luck would have it we had 12 children in our class today. We decided that today must be a "lucky day". It was a lot of fun looking for 12 in our environment - wonder what we'll notice tomorrow?
This week in kindergarten we are...
- finishing up our letter Kk work (we are having fun with words that begin with k and the children think knee and knife are pretty interesting - our language really can be tough!)
- practicing our March poem
-working on our Shape Books
- working on the number 7
- counting objects up to 30 and grouping them by 10's
- counting by 10's
- counting to 100
- making a St. Patrick's Day craft
- writing in our journals
- going to the computer lab
- going to gymnastics

Gymnastics Reminder
We are going to the KGTC on Wednesday and will be leaving immediately after the morning announcements. Please remember to dress the children in clothing appropriate for the activity. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered to drive. We have just enough parent helpers!
About that missed session...I don't think we can reschedule, although I will ask one more time. Mrs. Hyslop and I have booked another field trip, in May, to the Big Little Science Centre. I have asked the bus garage for a price quote and if it works out your $4 from the missed gymnastics session will go toward the school bus for this field trip instead. I will keep you posted.
We welcomed a new student to our classroom last week. It has been great to see the children become such wonderful helpers to our new girl!
A quick word on assessments...
I have completed the spring assessments in reading and math. Please feel free to come in after school and see how your child is doing. If this isn't possible for you, let me know and we can work something out. A folder of your child's term two work will be sent home this week.
Have a great week!
